Job Description:

Our client is seeking a Directional Drill Operator who will be responsible for performing horizontal directional drilling (HDD) and related underground utility construction work supporting natural gas distribution and service line installations. This role requires technical expertise, physical capability, and a strong commitment to safety and quality. The operator works under the direction of a Foreman while operating directional drilling equipment and supporting crew activities to ensure projects are completed safely, accurately, and in accordance with contract and regulatory requirements.

Assignment & Travel Requirement

Beginning: In January
This position requires temporary travel and project assignment as follows:

  • January – March (approximately 3 months):

Assignment in De Queen, Arkansas

  • 5 days per week
  • Per diem provided
  • Post-Assignment:

Role will transition to Monticello following completion of the De Queen project

Candidates must be willing and able to travel and remain assigned for the full duration of the out-of-state project.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate horizontal directional drilling equipment (Vermeer and/or Ditch Witch) to install underground gas lines and utilities
  • Perform drilling operations in accordance with project specifications and safety standards
  • Assist with placement, removal, and maintenance of underground utilities, including handling pipe, materials, and equipment
  • Perform manual labor as required, including shoveling, jackhammering, tamping, and installing pipe, duct, or conduit
  • Secure work sites, equipment, and materials at the end of each shift to ensure public safety and asset protection
  • Execute job deliverables in compliance with customer specifications and contract requirements
  • Ensure all work meets installation standards and is performed safely and correctly
  • Promote, monitor, and support a strong safety culture among crew members
  • Prepare and organize job sites to optimize workflow and productivity
  • Properly use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required
  • Follow all safety, incident reporting, and hazard escalation procedures
  • Communicate issues, hazards, or incidents promptly to the Foreman or Supervisor

Education & Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • 3–5 years of experience operating HDD equipment in underground utility or pipeline construction
  • Prior experience in the natural gas industry strongly preferred
  • HDD operation certifications, safety training, and utility locating certifications are highly desirable
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities
  • High attention to detail to ensure work is performed to industry standards and fully documented
  • Ability to think practically and creatively to implement effective safety solutions
  • Ability to remain calm, focused, and decisive during emergency situations
  • Strong situational awareness when working around underground utilities and active construction zones

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting, carrying, bending, and working in confined or uneven terrain.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and job site environments
  • Willingness to work extended hours, including travel assignments and project-based schedules.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $23.00 - $26.00 per hour
